Experience Durham Needs

For the past sixteen years, Daniel has been a practicing attorney in Durham County. While he handles a wide range of cases, including real estate, civil litigation, corporate law, contracts, trusts and estates, the bulk of his practice is criminal defense where he handles both private clients and indigent clients through contracts with Indigent Defense Services. Daniel has also been on the Capital Defenders contract list since 2012. During this time, he has represented individuals facing charges ranging from “low level” simple possession to first degree murder. He has personally handled more than 200 high level felonies (murders, sexual assaults, and armed robberies, among others) and over 600 low level felonies (breaking and entering, drug possession, property crimes, felony assaults). This is in addition to more than one thousand misdemeanor cases. He has also represented both plaintiffs and defendants in civil cases as well as working on corporate matters including acquisition and formation.

Daniel’s extensive experience as an attorney gives him insight and understanding necessary to bring people together and analyze the issues facing the City Council, and help determine what reforms are needed, and how best to implement those reforms. He’s not just going to adopt reforms advocated by others, but tailor those reforms to Durham. As we move Durham forward, we need someone who understands where we are, and how to get to where we want to be.

Unlike many attorneys, Daniel has extensive experience outside the practice of law, including significant management experience. Prior to attending law school, Daniel worked with Hospital Corporation of America, Inc., in San Antonio, Texas, and Arlington, Texas. While with HCA, Daniel Meier served as the Ethics and Compliance Officer, Property Manager, Physician Recruiter, and Information Systems Director at the Medical Center of Arlington. Daniel received his Master of Business Administration and Master of Science in Health Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1997 and 1998 respectively, and his Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame in 1995. After graduating from UNC School of Law in 2002, Daniel worked for several local law firms with a focus on general corporate/civil litigation matters, representing both plaintiffs and defendants, as well as some low-level criminal defense before forming his own firm in 2006.

Daniel’s wife is currently a Deputy with the Durham County Sheriff’s Office and was a Durham Police Officer for 17 years prior to moving to DCSO.
